Not every completed Cash card payment qualifies for cashback. Eligibility depends on the transaction type, the Merchant Category Code (MCC) supplied by the payment network, and any merchant-specific restrictions.
Which merchant categories are excluded?
Payments processed under the following MCCs do not earn cashback:
4829 — Money transfers
6010 — Manual cash disbursements
6011 — ATM withdrawals and automated cash disbursements
6012 — Financial institutions: merchandise and services
6050 and 6051 — Quasi-cash transactions
6211 — Securities brokers and dealers
6529 and 6530 — Stored-value loading
6535, 6536, 6537, 6538 and 6539
6540 — Point-of-interaction funding transactions
6611 and 6760
7800 — Government-owned lotteries
7801 — Government-licensed online casinos
7802 — Government-licensed horse and dog racing
7994 — Video game arcades and establishments
7995 — Betting and gambling
Some codes are listed without a category description. Eligibility is determined by the actual MCC supplied with the payment, not just the merchant’s name or advertised business type.
What other transactions are excluded?
The Cashback Rewards Program Terms also exclude:
ATM withdrawals
Peer-to-peer payments and person-to-person transfers
Currency exchange service providers
Tax payments
Purchases of gift cards, money orders or other cash equivalents, even if later used to buy goods or services
Paying a merchant for goods or services through PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Pay is not automatically a person-to-person transfer. The underlying purchase and merchant must still qualify.
Can individual merchants have cashback restrictions?
Yes. Individual merchants may be excluded or have a different cashback rate, even when their MCC is not on the list above. Merchant eligibility can change.
Does a cashback exclusion mean my payment will be declined?
No. Payment acceptance and cashback eligibility are separate. A payment may complete successfully without earning cashback.
